How to Choose the Right Cake Size for Your Guests

There is no single answer to “how many people does a cake serve?” The number depends on how big each slice is, the cake’s shape and height, whether there is other dessert, and how you serve it. Plan for your event rather than relying on a universal chart.

What changes the number of servings

  • Slice size. A thin party slice serves many more people than a generous dessert slice. Party slices at a big event are usually smaller than slices at a family dinner.
  • Cake height. A tall cake gives more servings than a shallow one of the same width, because you can cut it into more slices.
  • Shape. Round, square, heart-shaped and sculpted cakes cut differently. Square cakes often yield more even slices, while sculpted or novelty cakes can have areas, like heads or decoration, that aren’t ideal for serving.
  • Other desserts. If there are cupcakes, a dessert table or a meal, people eat less cake.
  • Who is eating. Children’s portions and adults’ portions differ, and some guests skip cake.
  • Decoration. Large decorations, figurines or toppers take up space and aren’t always served.

A step-by-step way to choose

  1. Count your guests, including children. If numbers are uncertain, use the higher estimate.
  2. Decide on slice size. Small party slices, or larger dessert slices.
  3. Check for other desserts. If cake is the only sweet, plan for a little more.
  4. Choose a shape and height that suit the design.
  5. Ask the baker to confirm how many the specific cake will serve.

The size ranges we use at Kukies Cakes

These are our estimates for standard custom designs, taken from our sizes and pricing page, where starting prices are listed. They assume party-style slices and are a guide only. Your cake’s design, height and how you cut it will change the real number.

Cake Approximate servings
6-inch round 10 to 12
7-inch round 12 to 20
8-inch round 20 to 25
2-tier 30 or more
3-tier 60 or more

We also make bento cakes, cupcakes and other treats for smaller gatherings or to add variety. Browse the options on bento cakes and cupcakes and treats.

If you’re baking at home, the cakes in our recipes are written for specific tins, for example our moist vanilla cake makes two 20 cm layers, which is about 12 to 16 slices.

When to order more, or less

  • Add cupcakes or a smaller second cake if you want variety without a large cake.
  • Go slightly larger if the cake is the only dessert, if you have many hungry guests or you want leftovers.
  • Go smaller if there are other desserts, or a big meal beforehand.
  • Tiered cakes are a good choice for large guest lists because the tiers can be cut separately.

Don’t forget storage and transport

A larger cake needs more fridge space and more careful handling. See how to store a birthday cake and how to transport a decorated cake.

Frequently asked questions

Should I order a bigger cake to be safe?

It depends how you'll serve it. If the cake is the only dessert, a little extra is reasonable; if there are other desserts, you may need less. If you're unsure, tell us your guest numbers and how you plan to serve, and we'll advise.

Do children eat the same amount as adults?

Usually not, but it varies by event. Mention the mix of adults and children when you enquire.
